Film Review: The Man of My Life
By Jeff Adolph
LGBT Movies
Defined by film reviewer Gary Kramer of the Bay Times as 'an unusually breathtaking and emotionally heartfelt story, The Man of My Life, currently available on DVD depicts how human friendship can grow and develop into something far greater.
Married and straight, Frederic (Bernard Campan) befriends his gay neighbor Hugo (Charles Berling), and the two men strike up a remarkable friendship with Federic adopting Hugo's philosophical approach to relationships.
As Hugo, who enjoys solitude says in the film, 'relationships are death.'
Consequentially this belief causes Frederic's marriage to suffer as he and Hugo find themselves falling ironically in love.
The film is not gay per se and has some spectacular ideas and visuals throughout, though at times it lacks in narrative. Thus, The Man in My Life fails to deliver a complete and well-developed storyline.
However, the performances in the film are notable, and both Bernard Campan and Charles Berling are credible with an accurate portrayal of their character. Viewers will find the film entertaining and leave with a sense of empowerment.
The Man of My Life is Rated as a B+.
