LGBT Tenants
I was recently contacted by a reader as to how she could possibly find gay tenants to lease her investment property. To answer her question I decided to do a little research and then write about my findings.
So, without further ado...
According to my research the majority of gay tenants would prefer to have gay landlords. In fact, a survey conducted by real estate agency in the UK revealed that more than 65% of gay tenants preferred gay landlords.
The issues that gay tenants felt were most important to them in terms of housing were as follows:
- the area was safe;
- that they could be openly gay without ridicule; and
- they were not stereotyped when they went house hunting, as in not all gays seek a trendy place to live next to nightlife.
To find gay tenants, if you are a landlord, or vice versa, there are several options open to you. These are as follows:
2) Go in search of gay rental websites that allow you to list your property, or accommodation requirements. Some excellent sites for listings include Craigslist and sublet.com. However, before joining any site make sure that you read their terms and conditions of membership.
3) Place an ad in local gay newspapers and magazines for a tenant, or rental property, that fits your needs.

Art, I'd think that a reputable gay realtor would be one person on whom you could count to find you the right location/landlord, etc. I seem to recall that somewhere in the archives of Gay Real Estate that Jeff posted an article about gay renters and methods by which easy contact with gay landlords could be made. I do recall that he noted craigslist as one option.
One of the wonderful things of this new age of "acceptance" (quotes because it isn't everywhere yet), is that professionals are far more likely to be able to advertise as gay and are, therefore, more readily found.
I wish you well - i'm sure it will all work out favorably for you, Art.

I am a gay male with a partner, and two dogs.
We currently own a home in Waycross Ga. I am currently in the process of getting a job in the Atlanta area, and we are in need of some information on rentals. We are looking for something safe, clean, and that allows pets. We are professional type people. We are quiet, and not into partying. I would also be interested in renting a room from a stable, older gay person that is looking for a weekly tenant. If you could point me in the right direction, or if you had any contacts you could pass along it would really help me out.
