'The gay community is a very important market segment, and this vacation home real-estate development and state-of-the-art ski resort and spa will be completely tailored to their needs,' said Mr. Caros.

Rosie the Realtor

By Jeff Adolph

LGBT Icons

Rosie_three_quarterHalifax Realtor, Rosemary Porter also known as Rosie the Realtor by many has hit the notoriety nail on the head with her unusual advertising campaign.

Rosie placed a red and white headscarf and blue shirt on and rolled up her sleeves to promote her motto 'Rosie gets the job done, she also knew that she would be unofficially announcing her sexuality to the world.'

Ms. Porter's move was not only bold as her image has a 'cult status' in the gay and feminist communities but also has gained her continual recognition. Many people in Nova Scotia automatically think of Rosie when they think of real estate.

Neville McKay, owner of a Halifax flower shop believes Ms. Porter's marketing is 'phenomenal.'

'I haven't bought a house from her, but I certainly know what her ads look like. I know who she is. When I think about real estate, she comes to mind,' he said.

RosieBased on the 1942 united States War Commission Image of Rosie the Riveter, Ms. Porter confesses it took her awhile to release the advertising image.

'I had some postcards done up and I showed it to a lot of people to see what they thought about it. The common reaction was falling down laughing hysterically. That was good, because that was really what I wanted, in a way.'

What began as a joke -- 'Rosie the Realtor'  -- between Rosemary and her partner has become a story of success.
