Breckenridge, Colorado is a small town of some 500 residents whose economy is supported by skiing, and yet the community are opposed to a ski slope expansion that can possibly increase their prosperity in a time of economic uncertainty.
The Breckenridge ski resorts currently occupy 39,000 acres, however they also have an additional 34,000 acres of national forest under permit for possible use in the future. The ski slope expansion would see the downhill skiing terrain extended to fifth peak, and this means more skiers, which pose a real threat to the quality of life for local residents.
"The mountain is bigger than the town. We don't want the mountain to crush the town," a local resident said at a local meeting.
At present the sleepy ski town of Breckenridge grows by a staggering 7,200 percent to 36,000 residents during ski season. While many would argue that the possible ski slope expansion would increase the number of skiers and benefit the local economy, local residents are fearful that this will add to the currently already unmanageable congestion on the roads during ski season, and that housing costs would continue to escalate.
Evidently the town's real estate was predominately priced under $1 million in 2001, however by 2007 this had changed considerably.
"In 2001, there were only a few homes in the county selling for more than $1 million. Last year, there were 150," Breckenridge town councilor, Dave Rossi said in a recent Denver Post article.
Plus, there are fears that the ski slope expansion could affect the surrounding communities of Crested Butte and Telluride.
"Nobody really knows what the right balance is or how the ski expansion affects quality of life. It is a question we are all asking," mayor of Crested Butte, Alan Bernholtz, said to Denver Post reporter, Mark Jaffe.
Hopefully, town planners and other government bodies can work in conjunction with local residents and resorts to find a solution that benefits all concerned.
